Independent Service Hours

Throughout my Independence service experience I learned one thing, which was that I actually enjoy taking care of kids. Before I volunteered to babysit I thought it was going to be a nightmare, but in the end it wasn't. Babysitting now will help me int he future when I plan on having kids of my own. During the time, that I was babysitting I didn't face as much difficulties as I thought I would. The only difficulty I faced is trying to make one of the kids go to sleep. He just wouldn't close his eyes. I wouldn't be able to babysit in class, because hello! it's a class. The children would probably disrupt the class. Service Learning will change my future behaviors by educating me more on certain subjects. My attitude will become more comprehending and sophisticated. I am glad that I chose this duty for my Independent service hours.

Service Learning Meeting 5

Last week in service learning, we looked up books and publishers on the internet. We were given a sheet to fill out. This sheet was to figure out what kind of books we were interested in having at the library. Some of us got finished and others weren't. At the end we accomplished on looking up several books.

Service Learning Meeting 4

I found this service learning meeting very boring. I didn't really deal with these emotions, because I was stuck in the boredom. We continued what we stopped at from the meeting before. Through service learning I have learned that being a school librarian isn't as easy as it seems. Through this experience I didn't really start out with any stereotypes. Through service learning I learned that I can get bored very easily and I need something to keep me upbeat so I won't be lazy and not want to do any work.

Bloom's Taxonomy.

1. Could this have happened in today's world?
yes. there are many people that go through different obstacles in order to achieve something like botyh George and Lennie did.

2.What was the problem with Curley and Lennie?
Curley felt as though he could pick on Lennie just, because he was "Retarded", but what Curley didn't know is that Lennie is very strong and wasn' that dumb.

3.How is Lennie similar to Bigger off of "Native Son"?
Society sees them both as a threat. One is picked on, because of their retardness while the other is picked on, because of their race. Both are seen as dangerous people.

4.Which events could have happened if Lennie never killed Curley's wife?
Probably George and Lennie would have accomplished their American dream and would be living with bot Candy and Crooks.

5.Do you know another instance where a male is killed for killing a female?
yes, in the book "Native Son" Bigger is killed for killing Mary Dalton.

6. What was the turning point in "Of Mice and Men"?
I would say when candy's dog got shot, because that revealed that something else bad was going to happen.

7. What do you see as other possible outcomes for "Of Mice and Men"
George could have let Lennie live and they both could have run off to another ranch to work at like they did before.

8. What are some of the problems of being black at this ranch?
Like Crooks, you would get excluded from every possible activity or outgoing from the other guys. You wouldn't be acknowledged as one of them.

9.What was the underlying theme of this book?
I would say brotherhood, because the men in this book come together and form some sort of male friendship, like George and Lennie have.

10. What questions would you ask of Curley?

why are you the way you are? and What made you want to fight Lennie when he did nothing to you?

The American Dream =]

In the novel "Of Mice and Men" there was one particular theme that was obviously shown-The American Dream. The American dream can be considered a different dream by different people. The American Dream could be the Dream to achieve your goals through hard work. In "Of Mice and Men" both George and Lennie desire that American Dream. They hoped to have their own land with a farm and rabbits to tend. Throughout this novel not only did George and Lennie wished of the American Dream, but also did other characters.

George and Lennie's dream relates to the dream that both Candy and Crooks want. They both always wanted it, but they never achieved it. This dream consisted of something precious, which is family. In the novel, there was a part where George, Lennie, Candy, and Crooks all agreed on making this dream come true, which showed the significance of family. Unfortuneatly it was never fulfilled, because Lennie got into trouble and got killed.

Not only did they have their American Dream, but so did Curley's wife. Her American dream consisted of fame and fortune. She wanted to become an actress and move to Hollywood, but this obviously never succeeded either. Instead she got stuck marrying Curley, who never let her do anything. She is not able to complete her dream, because Curley is to protective of her.

Curley's father also had this sort of American dream of his own. All he wanted was fortune and success. He would always be at the ranch making sure that his workers were working. That way he knew that his money would never stop flowing. Although this is not much of an American Dream, it is still like a goal that he plans on accomplishing.

At the end, no one actually achieves their American dream. George and Lennie fought hard for their American Dream and almost came close to it too, but unfortuneatly problems had to start developing. Not only did their dream not succeed, but also Curley's wife didn't either. In "Of Mice and Men" Steinbeck shows the many obstacles that can hit us when we try to complete a goal.

NON-Corrupting power of women.

In this perplex world women are always accused of being the cause of trouble. The novel Of Mice and Men is a perfect example of what many men view women as. John Steinbeck depicts women as objects that were put on this earth to lead men towards self destruction. That is absolutely wrong! Men do what they do, because they choose to do it. It's not like women tell them to do it. I believe that this book finds ways to attack women, one woman in particular, Curley's wife.

John Steinbeck introduces us to the character of Curly's wife. Right off the bat she is given the impression of a whore to the readers. To the rest of the characters she is considered a "Tramp", because of her seductiveness. The men on the ranch don't like her, because they feel that she will get them in trouble. After George first met her he automatically called her a "Tramp". It's as if they are blaming her for her attractiveness. It's not her fault that she's pretty. I feel as though the men in the ranch hate the fact that Curley's wife has that type of control over them and they have a problem admitting it so they throw the guilt on her, by saying she's a whore.

Curley's wife is given the reputation of a flirt. In the book she is shown flirting around with the men at the ranch. It's not that she's a whore, she just needs someone to give her that attention, because obviously Curley doesn't give it to her. Even though she is "flirty" she is actually lonely. That's why she is shown always flirting with Slim, because he is the only one that really ackknowledges her presence. All she simply does is try to make onversation.

Throughout this whole story, Curley's wife is actually lonely. She goes out into the ranch to erase that loneliness, but all that it did for her is give her the rep of a "slut". Her loneliness leads her to her death, as she tries to overcome it by teasing Lennie. All Curley's wife wanted was to be approved by the men in the ranch. All she wanted was to be loved and cared for, so she would go out into the ranch searching for a companion to talk to.

Basically, there is NO corrupting power of women. They are misunderstood by the men in this world. Men consider them as a threat to their so called "maleness". Men are just trying to cover up that they are actually scared of being dominated by women beauty. Women are not objects, like they consider in this novel. Women are not the cause of trouble, neither are men.

Service Learning Meeting 3

This week in service learning we cleaned out some stuff in the library. We were put to organize the magazines on the shelf and throw out all the old ones that we don't read. While this was being done others were in the back room dusting off books that were donated to us. At the end of the day people wrote letters to different authors so we will be able to have books that we actually like reading. For next week plan on continuing this process and see what pops up.

Service Learning 2 Meeting

The meeting we had for last week's service learning went well. It was basicly just an overview on what we were expected to do. The only problems that we encountered was that no one brought in the materials we were supposed to use. In the coming weeks we have to dust off some books in the library and write letters to authors so they could be able to send us new books that we would like. The role I would play is a helper.

These sites relate to my group

They both relate to my group, because they talk about the library and provide information on what to do in a library and the many resources you can find.

Empire of the Sun: Basie!

Empire of the Sun was an ok movie. It wasn’t actually what I expected, but I give it a 4 stars. One of my absolute favorite characters would be Basie. Although I dislike him so much he just cool like that. In the beginning it is obvious that Basie was only there for himself. His relationship with Jim didn’t matter to him at all. Poor Jim was just one of his many pets. One of his other many pets, Frank, was attached to Basie like a lost puppy. Basie had a lack of respect towards Frank. For example, when Frank first brought Jim to Basie, Basie let Jim eat Frank’s rice first. This showed bad quality of friendship from Basie, by making his hungry partner give up his only rice to Jim, which Basie just met.
This bad quality of friendship was shown again when Basie was chosen to move to another camp. Unfortunately, Jim was not chosen and was going to be left behind. As Jim called out for Basie, Basie just completely ignored him. That was real cold if you ask me. How you going to leave the one boy behind that helped you out by running you little errands around like a paper boy or something. Jim risked his life for one of Basie’s stupid tasks at the airfield camp. You would think that he would be worried, because Jim was trying to sneak into the American building, but no. Basie brilliant self decided to take bets on whether he would live or not.
Basie acts like the big bad tough guy, but he’s actually not. This is shown when the Japanese Sergeant beat Basie up. Basie just stood there like a coward. He is like one of those people that talk a lot of non sense and when it’s time to take action they cower away. He tries to show his peers that he’s the big boss, but actually he’s just a little mouse trapped in a maze created by the Japanese.
I believe that Basie is just a little kid that’s scared to show his true emotions. He’s probably really caring in the inside, but shadows it in the outside. Basie is so cool, because he makes people believe something that he’s really not. That’s talent right there. He’s like a Master Magician hypnotizing his audience, which consists of Jim, Frank, and his other American buddies. Too bad for him, because the Japanese army already know that trick and don’t fall for it. The Japanese sergeant is the only one that sees Basie’s true colors.

Service Learning Meeting 1

During service learning we talked about how to make the library more accessible to the students. We came up with ideas such as, referencing the books, taking old books that we don't want to McCall, and making signs for people to come in the library. This week we're are still going to come up with ideas and try to take action.

Service Learning

For Service Learning I think we should do a clothing drive for Foster Homes around the school area. Most children that are put into foster care don't really have any good clothing to be provided with so they would wear old ones. With a clothing drive they will be able to have decent clothing and it would help make a difference. One fFoster Care center that I found near our school is the ABS First Home Care Corporation. Here is the information:
Address:
111 N. 49th Street
1st Floor
Philadelphia, PA 19139

Phone(s):

We can partner up with them for the clothing drive.

We can also partner up with Episcopal Community Services.

Chapter 4

Chapter 4 pgs. 36-41
Title: I Dare You!

In this chapter, Bigger and all the
rest of his gang are waiting for Gus to get back at
the pool hall, so that they can go rob the store.
Bigger does not want to go and rob the store, because
a white man owns it. So without letting his friends
know that he is scared to go, he tortures Gus, once
Gus arrives at the pool hall. Bigger realizes that Gus
was made it back in time enough for them to rob the
store, so he makes it seem like Gus was late, by
putting a knife down his shirt and making him lick it
as well as many other horrible and degrading things.
Once Bigger is done torturing Gus, Gus throws a pool
ball and hits Bigger in his head. Bigger then tries to
hit Gus back but everyone holds him back to stop him
from killing Gus. Doc, the pool hall owner starts to
laugh at Bigger, which makes Bigger really mad. Bigger
then takes his rage out on the pool table by cutting
it up with his knife. Doc then pulled out his gun and
told Bigger that if he did not get out, he would shoot
him. Bigger told Doc “I Dare You!”

Chapter 1

Native Son

Chapter 1 - pages 3-12

"Good Morning"

This is the first chapter in Richard Wright's story
Native Son. In the beginning of this chapter Bigger
and is family are awaken by the sound of the alarm
clock. As they are getting ready to start their day
they are interrupted by a rat that has been harassing
them for a while. A big fuss is made and eventually
Bigger kills the rat. However instead of being praised
for saving his mom a sister from this rat, he is
yelled at for tormenting his sister. All of which
resulted in his mother telling him "Bigger sometimes I
don't even know why I birthed you!" which pushed him
over the edge and he had to get away, so the chapter
ends with him slamming the door on his family.

Interpretation

I think that Richard Wright started his book this way
to show right from the get-go what Bigger's life is
like. By giving details of the apartment and showing
that character of his mother, Wright gives us the
picture of what it is like to live in a poor, single
parent family in 1930s Chicago. Also this very first
chapter illustrates conflict with man v man, man v.
society, and man v. himself.

Knowledge
What happened when Jack and Bigger left the pool room?
-When they left the pool room they went to the movie theatre.

Comprehension
Who were the two key characters in planning the Robbery?
-Bigger and Gus

Application
What questions would you ask of Mary, if you had the chance to meet her?
-If I had was able to meet Mary I would ask her,
Why do you make your parents worry so much about you?

Analysis
What were some of the motives behind Bigger starting a fight with Gus?
-Bigger was scared of robbing Old Blum and Gus wasn't sure that he wanted to rob him so they started fighting.

Synthesis
How many ways can you come up with for Bigger to cover up him killing
Mary?
-He could have ran away
-He could have said she got killed by someone else
-He could have said she was so drunk that she killed herself

Evaluation
How would you feel if you were Bigger's mom and you found out that your son was a murderer?
-I would have been shocked that he would ever even think of killing someone. I fI was Bigger's mom i would have cried for my son, but he shouldn't have been doing what he was doing in the first place, trying to use Mary while she was drunk. Also, Mary shouldn't have been drunk in the first place especially with two men with her.

NHD Reflection

NHD was an ok experience this year. It wasn't as crazy as it was last year, because it was more organized. We were given 90 minutes for the whole NHD. I just think we shouldn't do NHD anymore, because the 10th graders already got two years of experience so we should just be done with it.

Chapter 6

Chapter: Accidental Purpose
Pages 80-92

This chapter starts off with Bigger dropping Jan off. Jan takes out some pamphlets relating to Communism and hands it over to Bigger so he can read them. Bigger then drives Mary to her house. Throughout the ride Mary was really drunk and blurted out random comments. Bigger felt really unomfortable, because he felt as though she was looking inside of him. He hated her for that. When they got to her house she couldn't get out the car, because she was so drunk. Bigger her helped her out and then let her loose. She was stumbling allover the place so he decided to help her up to her room. As he got Mary to her room he laid her down on her bed and felt the urge to kiss her so he did. While he was doing this Mary's mother walked in the room. Luckily, she was blind and didn't catch him. Bigger didn't know what to do, he wanted to leave the room , but he was scared Mrs. Dalton would hear him. Mary started fumbling around so he placed his hand over Mary's mouth so she wouldn't make any noise. Mrs. Dalton knew that Mary was drunk , because she smelt whisky on her. Mrs. Dalton kneeled on the the side of Mary's bed and prayed for he. Mrs. Dalton then left the room with the impression that Mary was sleeping. Bigger removed his hand from Mary's mouth and found that he killed her. Bigger felt the whole room sink on him and saw the reality, he killed her. Bigger's first move was to get rid of her so he stuffed her in a trunk. After he stuffed her in the trunk, he came up with an idea which was to burn Mary's body in the furnace. He took the trunk to the basement where the furnace was and took her body out. He then saw that her whole body could not fit into the furnace so he had no other choice, but to cut her head off.
In this
When Bigger first lays Mary down on her bed he felt excited. He didn't kiss Mary, because of her beauty, which has always been there, but for the fact that she can never be his. Her being white and him being black separates them from one another. The arrival of Mrs. Dalton in Mary's room frightened Bigger, because of his skin color. Him being black traps him in a bad situation. After he discovers that he killed Mary the situation escalates. Once again his color traps him in a bad situation, but this time in a murder. Bigger killing Mary probably opened up a side of him that he knew was there, but would never actually come out.

NHD

So far for my project I was able to find alot of helpful websites. I was also able to find someone that I could interview. Although the person didn't give me enough information it was still helpful in a way. All i'm missing now it to finish my annotated bibliography and start writing my paper.

My NHD topic is the cuban missile crisis. The cuban missile crisis was a time where the U.S and soviet felt threatened by eachother. Soviet leader Krushchev decided to place missiles in Cuba, in case the U.S ever tried to bomb them. Fidel Castro liked the idea, because he felt as though it would protect his land from being invaded again by U.S army. John F. Kennedy was unaware of the situation until he was shown photographs of installations of the missiles in Cuba. He decided to come into an agreement with Krushchev. I chose this topic, because I found it interesting how Cuba was involved in the whole Soviet/US warfare. Hopefully I learn exactly why this crisis occurred.
